Laura Canty, PhD
Research Technologist II
BSc, Biomedical Sciences, University of Waterloo

What’s your background?
I developed a passion for Science during my undergraduate studies at UWaterloo, which inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. at McGill University, where I examined the molecular mechanisms governing cell sorting and tissue separation during development. I did a postdoctoral Fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre where I attempted to improve photophysical properties of a Far-red fluorescent protein.
Why science?
I love learning about the way things work. I also really enjoy problem-solving and the variety that comes with a job in research—no two days are the same!
Do you have any advice for someone interested in a career in research?
Science is a journey so make sure you are the type of person who really enjoys the journey and not just the destination.
What do you like to do for leisure?
Spending time with family, trying new recipes, and spending time outdoors.
Any song or book recommendations?
